Clownfish with Anenome

Clownfish with Anenome

Most people when getting into the saltwater aquariumhobby are unaware of one of the most important pieces of equipment – A Protein Skimmer.  There are several different types of protein skimmers and they range in price from $100 into the thousands.  If you can afford it, buy as nice of a protein skimmer as you possibly can.  I’ll explain why later.

First off – What is a protein skimmer and how does it work?

A protein skimmer removes organic wastes from aquarium water by mixing large amounts of air with water.  The air swirls and stirs the aquarium water until foam is created.  The foam is what we would like to get rid of so we “skim” it off the surface of the water.  This all takes place in the protein skimmer automatically and without much effort on the users part.  The foamy solution is dumped into the collection cup where it can be removed from the aquarium water.

Several different types of protein skimmers are Venturi, counter current, and air driven.  Air driven protein skimmer should avoided if possible because they require more maintenance than other skimmers.  Air driven skimmers use an air stone to add air to the water and produce foam.  Over time this can become clogged and performance will suffer.  When a protein skimmer is working properly, your saltwater aquarium will see a vast difference.

So many choices….

There are hundreds of protein skimmers to pick from, some very effective and others not.  Always read the reviews on a protein skimmers before purchasing.  One thing that should be noted it that price does not always indicate performance.  An expensive skimmer does not necessarily make it a better one.  You can expect to spend between $200-300 dollars for a decent skimmer with several high end skimmers being out of that budget.

Here at Protein Skimmer Reviews, we are trying to make your decision process easier by providing user reviews of these products.  Find a skimmer for you today.
